Lord Shrinathji

Shri Vallabhacharyaji

Under the auspices of Shri Vallabhacharya Vidya Sabha and by the blessings of His Holiness 108 Goswami Shri Mathureshwarji Mahoday, Shri Jumna Doss and Shri Amichand Doss established the college to perpetuate the memory of their father Shri Dwaraka Doss Goverdhan Doss. With a humble beginning as an undergraduate college in 1964, it grew into a multidisciplinary centre of learning. To provide educational opportunities to the working class, the college started evening courses (1971) and distance learning programmes of IGNOU (1992). Today, the college is one of the reputed educational institutions in the metropolis of Chennai. The college is affiliated to the University of Madras.

The College Crest

Enshrined in a lotus in full bloom, the college crest represents the cult of devotion preached by Mahaprabhu Shri Vallabhacharya. The sacrificial fire at the centre of the crest symbolises the Lord Himself (yagno vai Vishnuh). The three steps of the altar signifying kshara, akshra and poorna purushothama lead one to the Lord. At the foot of the altar is the book of divine knowledge (the vedas); the three flowers on it represent the factors conducive to the acquisition and propagation of knowledge - intelligence, action and material resources. The college motto satyam param dheemahi (may we meditate on the supreme truth) taken from Srimad Bhagavatam embodies the aim of all knowledge which is the realization of supreme truth. The college colours are flaming red and sky blue

The Governing Body

Vallabhachary Vidya Sabha

Around 250 years ago, the noble family of Gocoola Doss Jumna Doss left their native Gujarat and traversed all the way down Soth to settle down in Madras in the area presently called George Town. The society then basically predominated by Telugu speaking people.

The family by tradition followed Vaishnavism as propounded by the Vallabha Philosophy and is totally dedicated to the family deity Shri Natwarlalji and is carrying on the worship in the same traditional manner even today.

In the beginning, Gocoola Doss Jumna Doss's elder son, Shri Goverdhan Dasji served as Manager in the Kushaldas family for a long time. He worked hard with the idea that labour is the basis of progress and soon began his own business with his younger brother Gocoola Doss Jumna Doss in the year 1882. They dealt in dyes, saffron, kasthuri, silk, velvet caps and imported silk. Later on, the family successfully ventured into new pastures. They branched out from their traditonal business into new grounds, now dealing with yarn and textiles. It is said "Success treads on every right step". The family prospered well during this period and reached a prestigious place in the society of Madras. It was this family that took the decision to lend monetary support to the then "b and C Mills" which was in financial problems. With their golden touch, the mill flourished once agian and regained its past glory. In recognition of their contribution, the British Directors of "B and C Mill" made one of their family members a Director of the mills. They held this responsible position for 50 years and the company came to be known as Binny Ltd. It was their relentless service and total contribution that led to the establishment of Indian Bank Ltd. in those days. Late Seth Shri Purushotham Gocoola Doss and Ram Doss Purushotham Doss were Directors of Indian Bank for more than 50 years.

It was the initiative taken by Shri Jumna Doss Dwaraka Doss along with others which led to the establishment of oriental benefits and deposits society Ltd. This noble family soon reached the pinnacle of success in their business and was hightly respected by society. They were lucky to receive the blessings of several Acharyas of the Vallabh Peetam. All the Acharyas of the Goswami family are intimate with the noble family of Gocoola Doss.

After the passing away of late Shri Dwaraka Doss Goverdhan Doss, Shri Purushotham Doss took charge of the business along with his nephew and their business grew by leaps and bounds. Besides arranging for several discourses and Bhagavat Sapthas, they also began many charitable organsiations. They established several choultires and maternity homes. They also came forward and established Shri. Shuddhadwaita Vaishnav Maha Sabha which today runs many educational institutions under its banner. With the birth of Shri Vallabhacharya Vidya Sabha, the Dwaraka Doss Goverdhan Doss Vaishnav college was established.
